The European Union Delegation to the African Union will host a webinar titled “Journalists as Frontline Workers in the Battle against COVID-19 Confirmation.”

This webinar seeks to explore solutions to these challenges and explore:

  • The current state of Press Freedom in Europe and Africa
  • The balance between Press Freedom and Responsibility
  • The opportunities to support the independence, safety and freedom of journalists across Africa and Europe

The EU noted that a free press is critical in countering disinformation, which is putting lives at risk and undermining the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that the media’s work is more important than ever, as they help members of the public know how to act and governments make informed decisions.

EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, on World Press Freedom Day said that: “In too many countries journalists have to contend with restrictive legislation, sometimes ascribed to the COVID-19 emergency that curbs…freedom of the press. Too many face harassment, arbitrary arrest and imprisonment. Too many have lost their lives for doing their work”
