Bagauda Kaltho Memorial Media Lecture holds Tuesday

The 2020 edition of Bagauda Kaltho Memorial Media Lecture will hold virtually on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at 2pm Nigerian time.

The lecture which is the second in the series is organised annually by Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF).

The lecture, expected to draw participants from across Africa, has as its theme Press Freedom vs. Digital Surveillance: How Safe is the African Journalist.

A statement by the Executive Director, AMDF, Iliya Kure said the theme has become necessary in view of the emerging challenges where journalists are being monitored, stalked or having their digital identities stolen.

The lecture will be delivered by Kimberly Dozier, a US-based Journalist – a TIME Magazine contributor, and CNN Global Affairs Analyst – she is an expert in digital security for journalists.

The lecture will feature a panel discussion featuring three Press Freedom Advocates in Africa; Yahye Xanas, Executive Director, Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA); Shu’aibu Usman Leman, National Secretary, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ); and Eyong Blaise, a Cameroon-based multimedia journalist, who reports for Deutsche Welle (DW), BBC, and Reuters.

AMDF will also use the occasion to present the Courage in Journalism Award to honour a journalist who, regardless of all odds, source stories.

The first Memorial Media Lecture which held in 2019, examined varying issues that impacted on media practice in Africa, as well as its role in shaping democracy.

Late Bagauda Kaltho in whose memory the lecture is being held, was one of the courageous Nigerian journalists who went missing in a mysterious circumstance in 1996.
