Call for applications: SADC student’s journalist Fellowships for #AIJC19

DEADLINE: Thursday 8 August 2019

Applications are now open for the 2019 African Journalism Conference (#AIJC19).

The African Investigative Journalism Conference (#AIJC19) is the premier annual gathering of African investigative reporters – a three-day international conference for and about investigative journalism. It involves skills training, networking, promoting, updates on cutting edge tools, collaboration and in-depth accounts of major investigative stories. It is hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

This year’s conference will feature more than 50 speakers in workshops, panel discussions and networking sessions, as well as skills training in areas such as advanced data analysis and security. Key speakers include award-winning journalists from across the world, and Africa’s best. This is a chance to hear and meet those leading the field and enhance your skills with the latest tools and tips.

In 2019, we have 10 fully-funded places for journalism students from the SADC region (Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, eSwatini, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe).

At AIJC2019 there will be opportunities to hear some of the best investigative journalists in Africa talking about their stories and sharing their skills. We have invited a number of international speakers, and we will provide courses in a range of skills important for all graduating journalists. Further, we will be running a student’s newsroom during the conference, where they will do online and social media coverage, and contribute to our conference edition of the campus newspaper, Vuvuzela, under the supervision of tutors.

Only students currently in their final year of an undergraduate journalism degree, honours or master’s degree in journalism are eligible to apply for a bursary to attend the conference.

The bursary covers your travel costs to the conference and return; your hotel accommodation in Johannesburg, meals, conference fees and ground transport to and from the conference.

To apply for a place, send your CV and a covering note from your head of department or equivalent, and a motivation of not more than 500 words to conference@journalism.co.za by Thursday 8 August 2019. All applications will be acknowledged on receipt and a final decision on places will be made by Friday 30 August 2019.
