Data journalists worldwide can apply for Sigma Awards

Sigma Awards

DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 1, 2021 ― The Sigma Awards, sponsored by the Google News Initiative, is currently accepting entries for data journalism across the world.

The competition will highlight the best data journalism done about the pandemic and topics such as politics, sports and the environment.

Works must have been published in 2020. Entries in other languages than English should offer as much translation as possible so that pre-jury and jury can fully understand applicants’ work.

The overall cash prize is US$5,000 and will be distributed among the winners.

Applicants can also apply to be considered for portfolio, or for a Young Talent prize. A portfolio entry should include no more than 10 examples of applicants’ work which must be added via the link section of the application form.

Interested applicants should specify if they qualify as a large or a small newsroom or as an individual, where applicable.

Small newsrooms are defined as those with 35 or fewer journalists (including regular freelancers/contractors), or equivalent (eg, two half-time freelancers count as one person.)

Organisations that do not qualify under this definition but who believe they belong in the small newsroom category may petition for an exception by sending a letter from the editor-in-chief explaining his or her rationale to Marianne Bouchart, executive director at marianne@sigmaawards.org.

The award organisers seek to receive a large number of entries tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. However, all data journalism projects, regardless of their topics, can be entered in the competition.

Short, concise and well-curated entries that pare the work to its essentials will be appreciated.

Applicants can enter as many projects as they want.

The deadline is February 1st, 2021 at 11:59pm ET. Winners will be announced in May 2021.
