Facebook launches fellowship to help combat health misinformation

Facebook is launching a year-long fellowship with 10 fact-checking organizations as part of efforts to combat health misinformation globally.

This fellowship will include organizations based in Africa, Asia, Europe, India, Latin America and the Middle East.

Fellows selected for the programme will be virtually trained by third-party experts as well as experts from CrowdTangle, Facebook’s powerful social analytics tool.

A statement on Facebook website reads in part: “Over the past several months, we’ve seen many of our fact-checking partners shift their work toward focusing on COVID-19 misinformation, which we’ve supported through launching a $1M grant program to help organizations maintain or increase their capacity during this time.

“At the same time, fact-checkers around the world have told us that they’d like to focus on health misinformation as a longer-term part of what they do.

“We’re excited to be launching a year-long fellowship with 10 fact-checking organizations that are part of our fact-checking program, to bring on new team members to help them approach this complex and important topic.

“At a later date, these training modules will be made publicly available for journalists, fact-checkers, students and others interested in debunking health misinformation.

“Fellows may also help their host organizations map out a plan for integrating health misinformation into their fact-checking work, for example by launching health-focused newsletters, podcasts or video series; answering health questions from readers; building relationships with health experts, and more.

“We’ll be sharing more on this program and the organizations in the coming weeks and throughout the Fall.”
