Maria Ressa and Bianca Albu have been announced winners of the 2020 Free Press Awards.
While Maria Ressa was adjudged winner of the Most Resilient Journalist of 2020, Bianca Albu was adjudged winner of the Newcomer of the Year – Hans Verploeg Award 2020.
According to the jury, Maria Ressa, the globally renowned Filipino journalist and CEO of Rappler has been an advocator for press freedom for years.
The jury added that even now, when she has been victim of a politically motivated prosecution, and is facing up to six years in prison, Maria Ressa has remained a beacon of hope and optimism for journalism.
The Free Press Awards jury added that Albu, a Romanian journalist who uncovered links between a money laundering network belonging to the Spanish Royal family, a corrupt Romanian politician, and the local police, showed great determination when she got confronted with political aggression in the first year of her career.
Both journalists will be present during Free Press Live – Stand up for Journalists and Justice to talk about their drive and passion for their work.
This year, due to COVID-19, Free Press Live will be held online in the form of a webinar with an interactive element on November 5 (3-4pm CET).
Free Press Live highlights the importance of reliable information and safety of journalists with guests from all over the world.
This year’s keynote speaker is Věra Jourová: Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparancy.
