Africans can apply for OPTIMA small grants to produce localized internet shutdown resources

DEADLINE: DECEMBER 21, 2020 — OPTIMA is offering small grants for the development of resources to equip advocates in Sub-Saharan Africa to prevent, prepare for and respond to internet shutdowns in their countries.

OPTIMA is Internews’ program that supports resources to enable more strategic, coordinated, cross-sectoral and replicable responses to major instances of internet shutdowns in Africa.

Grants will be between $1,000 and $5,000 USD.

These funds are only available to individuals or organizations interested in developing resources capable of responding to Internet shutdowns in Africa.

Entrants can produce materials in any language.

Applicants must be based in Sub-Saharan Africa, or propose projects that target the region.

Resources created for use in these countries will be given precedent: Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia,  Kenya, Mauritania, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda,  Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Projects should not exceed three months, with the possibility of a two-month extension after that time.

Projects may begin as early as January 1 and run through March 31, 2021.
