Applications open for UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2020

DEADLINE: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2020

Journalists, organisations or institutions that promote press freedom worldwide can be nominated for a US$25,000 award.

The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize will recognise a significant contribution to press freedom, especially in high-risk areas.

UNESCO invites the governments of Member States, in consultation with their National Commissions, as well as international and regional professional non-governmental organizations, active in the field of press freedom, to nominate candidates for next year’s UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.

This Prize was established by UNESCO’s Executive Board, in 1997, in honour of Guillermo Cano, a Colombian journalist who died in the exercise of his profession.

World Press Freedom Day 2020 will take place in The Hague (Netherlands) from 22 to 24 April 2020.

The Prize is funded by the Cano Foundation (Colombia) and the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation (Finland).
