PUNCH journalist wins 2024 global media competition on labour migration

Babatunde Titilola, a lawyer and Features Journalist for The PUNCH, has emerged as one of the winners of the 2024 Global Media Competition on Labour Migration.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) announced the winners of the 10th edition of the competition on Thursday, stating that the winning entries provide outstanding and balanced reporting on labour migration, forced labour and fair recruitment.

The ILO said it received more than 430 entries from 92 countries. As the only Nigerian who won, Titilola’s Harrowing tales of survivors trapped in the web of trafficking won the category: Special prize on forced labour.

His report, which was published in Punch on July 14, 2024, centres on the sad reality of innocent lives who are lured into a world of sexual exploitation and suffering under the guise of promising opportunities abroad.

“The winning articles provide a balanced and innovative perspective on the challenges and benefits of labour migration, shedding light on the personal stories of migrant workers. By amplifying their voices and experiences, these pieces bridge borders and foster greater understanding of the realities faced by migrant workers and their communities,” the ILO stated.
