Those who supervise journalists are eligible for the fellowships if they also have at least five years as a working journalist.

WPI notes that any journalism-related work completed as a university student does not count toward experience while those who work in public relations or at organisations whose primary business is not the media are not eligible.

Applicant must also be currently employed as a non-US journalist working outside of the United States.

Others criteria to be considered by WPI include fluency in both written and spoken English and the potential for leadership.
