Ifeoluwa Adediran, Kabir Adejumo, Damilola Ayeni, 12 others shortlisted for international award on environment

Three young Nigerian journalists – Ifeoluwa Adediran, Kabir Adejumo and Damilola Ayeni – have been shortlisted for the one-off Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award – Environment which focuses on environment and climate change.

The shortlist of 15 reporting projects was made public on Monday, November 1, 2021, which coincided with the commencement of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference codenamed #COP26 holding in Glasgow, Scotland.

A statement on the website noted that the one-off award was instituted to mark the make-or-break UN climate summit.

The statement noted that the winners of this special environmental prize and the Young Journalist Award will be revealed during the FPA’s media awards ceremony in London on 29 November.

Ifeoluwa Adediran’s entry “Lagos community battles indiscriminate waste dumping by cart pushers” explored the impact of indiscriminate waste disposals by the cart pushers and “terrible air pollution” in Gengere, a densely populated neighbourhood in Lagos State.

Kabir Adejumo’s entry “Inside illicit timber trade in Osun causing deforestation” explored the history of a high rate of deforestation by illegal loggers who engage in illicit timber trade inside Shasha forest reserve, Osun State which covers about 310km2.

Damilola Ayeni’s entry “Ebedei, Delta State. Gas Flaring Village Where the People Eat Poisons and Are Often Terminally Sick” gathered shreds of evidence about the health and environmental dangers that residents of Ebedei, a small village in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State lived with for 15 years.
