Busari, Lawal, Olapoju, Ololade, others make 2021 Fetisov Journalism Awards shortlist

Investigative and reporting projects of four Nigerian journalists and editors – Kemi Busari, Shola Lawal, Kolade Olapoju and Olatunji Ololade – have made the shortlist of the 2021 Fetisov Journalism Awards.

Editor of Dubawa, Kemi Busari’s investigation titled “Blood on Uniforms Series” was part of the shortlist in the Outstanding Investigative Reporting category.

Editor of The Cable, Kolapo Olapoju’s investigative story series – Conflict in a Pandemic (I): The Southern Kaduna Children and Women Devastated by a Wave of Killings and Conflict In A Pandemic (II): The Deserted Villages of Southern Kaduna Where Only the Brave Dare Reside – and Associate Editor of The Nation newspaper, Olatunji Ololade’s work titled “The Boys Who Swapped Football for Bullets” made the shortlist for the Outstanding Contribution to Peace category.

Meanwhile, independent filmmaker and freelance West African correspondent of international news outlets, Shola Lawal’s report titled “As Ocean Empties, Senegal’s Fishermen Risk Seas for New Life In Europe” also made the shortlist in the Contribution to Civil Rights category.

Their works were part of the 37 projects selected across four categories from the less than 400 entries received from 80 countries.

The projects which made the shortlist include 17 collaborative works and 11 cross-border investigations from 34 countries.

A statement on the organisers’ website says the FJA Jury will define 12 prize winners during the second round of the competition.

It added that winning projects will be posted on the FJA website on February 10, 2022 while the awards ceremony will take place in Zurich, Switzerland on April 22th, 2022.

The statement also noted that three winners in each category will share a monetary prize of 130,000 Swiss francs while the first prize winner in each category will receive a money prize of 100,000 Swiss francs and a unique silver statuette designed and handcrafted in Switzerland.
